يرتاحُis stirred منكby you إلىtoward الهَوىpassion المَوموقِdearly loved
O haunt of our youthful passion, this is a yearning man's plea,
who, stirred by you, thrills to dearly cherished love.
هلshall أطرُقَنَّI indeed visit by night العُمْرَal-ʿUmr monastery بينَamong عِصابَةٍa band
سَلكواthey took إلىto اللَّذاتِpleasures كلَّevery طريقِِroad
Shall I visit al-ʿUmr by night, among a band
who have taken every road to pleasure?
أمor هلshall أرىI see القصرَthe palace المُنيفَlofty مُعَمَّماًturbaned
بِرداءِin a mantle of غَيْمٍcloud كالرِّداءِlike a cloak رَقيقِdelicate
Or shall I see the lofty palace turbaned
in a mantle of cloud, delicate as a cloak;
وقَلالَيand the cells of الدَّيرِthe monastery التيwhich لولاbut for النَّوىseparation
لمdid not أَرمِهاI assail them بِقِلىًwith aversion ولاnor بعُقُوقِwith disloyalty
and the monastery's cells, which, but for separation,
I would not have treated with aversion or disloyalty,
محمرَّةَreddened الجُدرانِthe walls يَنفَحُwafts طِيبُهاtheir fragrance
فكأنَّهاso they seem مَبْنِيَّةٌbuilt بخَلوقِof saffron perfume
their walls reddened, their fragrance wafting,
as though they were built of saffron perfume;
ومحلَّand the abode of خاشِعَةِhumble القُلوبِhearts تَفَرَّدُواthey secluded themselves
بالذِّكْرِin remembrance بينَamong فُروقِهits crests وفُروقِand crests
and the abode of the humble-hearted, who secluded themselves
in remembrance, among its crests and other crests?
أغشاهُI visit it بينَamong مُنافِقٍa hypocrite متجَمِّلٍputting on a fair show
ومُناضِلٍand one defending عنon behalf of كُفْرِهِhis unbelief زِنْديقِa heretic
I visit it among a hypocrite putting on a fair show
and a heretic defending his unbelief,
وأَغَنَّand a mellow-voiced one تَحسِبُyou take to be جِيدَهhis neck إبريقَهhis ewer
ماwhenever قامَhe rises يَسفَحُhe pours out عَبْرَةَthe tear of الإبريقِthe ewer
and a mellow-voiced one whose neck you would take for his ewer
whenever he rises to shed the ewer's tear.
يتنازَعونَthey exchange علىover الرَّحيقِpure wine غَرائِباًrare verses
يَحْسِبْنَare taken to be زاهرةًradiant كؤوسَcups of رَحيقِpure wine
Over pure wine they exchange rare verses,
which, radiant, are taken for cups of pure wine.
صدَرَتْthey issued عنfrom الأفكارِthoughts وهيand they are كأنهاas though they were
رَقراقُshimmering liquid صادرةٍflowing forth عنfrom الرَّاووقِthe wine strainer
They issued from thoughts, yet seemed like
shimmering wine flowing from the strainer.

وسَطاand assailed عليَّupon me فكانَand so was غيرَnot رَفيقِgentle
A time whose turns were gentle with me for a moment,
then assailed me and proved anything but kind.
فمتىso when أزورُshall I visit قِبابَdomes مُشرفَةِlofty الذُّرىthe summits
فأوردَand so go to drink بينَbetween النَّسرِal-Nasr, the Eagle star والعَيُّوقِand al-ʿAyyūq, Capella
So when shall I visit the lofty-crested domes,
and come to drink between al-Nasr and al-ʿAyyūq,
وأرىand see الصَّوامعَthe hermitages فيon غوارِبِthe crests of أُكْمِهاtheir hills

and see the hermitages on the backs of their hills,
like howdahs on the backs of she-camels,

red, with white ones gleaming among them, as though
you had interspersed a carnelian necklace with camphor?
كَلِفٌa lovesick man تَذَكَّرَrecalled قبلَbefore ناهيةِthe restraint of النُّهىreason
ظِلَّيْنِtwo shades ظِلَّthe shade of هوىًlove وظلَّand the shade of حَديقِgardens
A lovesick man recalled, before reason's restraint,
two shades: the shade of love and the shade of gardens.
فتفرَّقَتْthen scattered عَبَراتُهhis tears فيacross خَدِّهhis cheek
إذfor لاno مُجيرَprotector لهfor him منfrom التَّفريقِseparation
Then his tears scattered across his cheek,
for none could shield him from separation.
