دعوت بالشعر على خدّه

حين زها بالتيه والعجب

I called down hair upon his cheek

when he strutted with haughtiness and conceit.

فأنبت الله له لحية

فأنبت الله له لحية

تزيدني كربا على كرب

تزيدني كربا على كرب

So God made a beard grow for him

that brings me anguish upon anguish.

فشعره ينبت في خدّه

فشعره ينبت في خدّه

وشوكه يغرس في قلبي

وشوكه يغرس في قلبي

For his hair grows on his cheek,

and its thorns are planted in my heart.

والله لا زلت له عاشقا

والله لا زلت له عاشقا

أو تطلع الشمس من الغرب

أو تطلع الشمس من الغرب

By God, I shall never cease to love him

until the sun rises from the west.
