    لها لَوعةٌ يَدمَى عليكَ رسيسُها

    You have lost, Abū ʿUmrān, a delicate wife,

    For whom grief's lingering ache bleeds within you;

    And a scribe whose pens, when unsheathed,

    Are iron, and women's necks her parchments.

    She left chicks behind: deprived of her feeding,

    Their bliss ended, and their misery returned.

    Who, then, will shield them from harm, or rescue them

    From the blood of the lowly—or who will tend them?

    كذاك الغواني للحِمامِ نفوسُها

    Take solace, for our souls belong to death;

    So too do the souls of beautiful women.
