You gladdened eyes, O Ibn al-ʿAṣab,

and became a sturdy rope for lewdness.

You taught some people how to carouse,

so they hastily cast modesty aside

and entered the domed pavilion unafraid.

They ate rich fare throughout their day,

and their joy was not cut short.

O you who deem the wine jars’ wineskin a religion,

and who coax life so that it grows gentle,

I heed neither blame nor disparagement.

Life is for desires alone; we were led

to an expense divided among twenty.

And had you borne it alone, we would have shat.
