And a wondrous beauty whose raiment is now loveliness:

Bashfulness dyed her cloak and her waist-wrap.

She loosed her binding’s fragrant breath and draped herself

In crimson, and fastened her buttons tight.

So the eye grows weary when it sees her radiance,

And the soul delights when it puts her qualities to the test.

As though she were, in the palm, a lover’s cheek

That bashfulness toyed with, kindling its fire.

    فإذا سَرى رَكْبُ النَّسيمِ أثارَها

    Borne, she carries a dust-cloud of ambergris;

And when the breeze’s caravan travels by night, it stirs it up.

She trusted the east wind with her secrets

Late at night; then the east wind let her secrets slip.

And it is as though, in her, you clasped a glowing coal,

Your right hand safe from its heat and sparks.

I deem the bitter orange nothing but a temptation

Whose veils time has torn aside for a beholder.

The eyes adore its charms; even if they gazed

At it forever, they would never satisfy their desires.
