O Sa‘id, would you care to visit a house

Praised by the hearts of its visitors?

A spacious place, whose springs meet its walls,

And you see the sky above it like moons.

The bashful-faced man sheds his robe of modesty

Within it, then struts like a naked sword,

    Luxuriating in lavish comfort,

Granted him in place of rags.

No desert dwellers ever beheld its excellence

Without its rousing their anger against the townsfolk.

And often you have enjoyed within it a delight

That, but for it, would never have emerged from behind curtains.

And on its walls you see the champions of battle,

    Strutting amid the swaying spears.

Their swords were drawn without a flash,

And their steeds ran without dust.

Two armies: no mighty man gained a rank

Among them, nor did the lowly return in disgrace.

And pampered men, far removed from battle,

Clad in good fortune while the fates were heedless.

To this one the drinking companion offers a greeting,

A gracious one; that one enjoys a cup of wine.

Theirs is a life whose reality is distant, though

Its beauties lie close before the eyes.

Until, when our bodies had found ease in it

And fulfilled through it one of their desires,

We turned to the charm and pleasure of the morning draught.

Indeed, the morning draught is the mount of noble men.

And the day most worthy of wine and drinking it

Is a day that grants you steady, abundant rain.
