The rain restored the plants' drunkenness, though they had sobered,

and revived something of spring's vanished days.

And lightning's flint kept kindling its fire all night

over the myrtle, till it quivered there and struck sparks.

The garden's doves seemed drunk whenever

they sang among its branches or swayed to and fro.

And the garden breeze sought shelter after its long journey,

weary and exhausted at the tips of the branches.

So it touched the chrysanthemum's crenellated blossoms,

and shook hands with the broad bean's winged flowers.

And it loosened the blossoms from their buttons, so they became

like a foreign slave's speech as he strove for eloquence.

And it opened anemones in the hue of cheeks,

a hue the herd's eyes found lovelier and more becoming.

It showed you arrowheads before fully revealing itself,

and the arrows' tribute fell due when it blossomed.
