Come, for our wine has cooled,

And our goblets are poised for drinking.

And our roses have been refreshed with its water,

And our apples have been transformed by musk.

And our serving boys have sent back our chestnut steeds,

And our boatman has led the black steeds to us.

So we are on a surging sea of clashing waves,

    Our bodies imperiled there.

We are drinking companions; our reproachers have withdrawn

From reproach, and our advisers have turned back.

Our minds are weighty in the balance,

Our spirits are light in revelry.

Our right hands are dyed by the cup,

And our spears are stained with blood.

We are like the sons of Hashim in our onslaught,

When our joys drive care away:

    So our Mansur bestows bounties,

And our Saffah makes breastbones bleed.

And your face, O Hamd, if darkness falls,

Is our lamp amid fate's vicissitudes.

For if you keep your distance, our satirist will vex you,

And if you draw near, our panegyrist will delight you.
