I dwell in the precincts of ancestral honor,

and don the armor of ever-ready pride.

And I know I am what chokes my foe

on his cool drink, and a bone in the envier’s throat.

And I pardon, while crimson deaths around me

flaunt themselves, and thunderbolts are among my troops.

I see letters ascending, and rhymes

with dust-smeared breasts upon the ground.

    Alas, for a fresh disposition

under which they might be honored—or a happy fortune!

Would that God might aid them with a noble man,

    swift at their summons, valiant.

And a barber-surgeon composes verse; there came

his oddities to me by post.

I jested; he grew earnest in reproach, and there blazed

in its wake the flames of verse.

How remote is safety from hands

by which the fiercest lions are deceived!

So do not set your swords apart from other swords:

for many a stubborn tyrant have they slain.

Keen blades that strike necks in ignorance,

and hold sway over foreheads and cheeks.

You soothe whoever you have assailed with them

with words like the striped patterns of cloaks:

now graceful verse that you embroider,

now sound prose that you refine.

How often his towel is rolled up

around the scrolls of your verse and the steel!

Then he recites to him what you composed about him,

and shaves his head after the recitation.
