تَقَرَّبْتُI drew near منto هذيthese القَوارِبِthe boats راكباًas a passenger
وياand oh ليتَنيwould that I were منهاfrom them الغداةَthis morning بَعيدُfar away
I drew near these boats as a passenger,
And oh, would that this morning I were far from them!
فبِتُّso I spent the night أرىseeing جُندَthe host of الحِمامِdeath وليسَand there were no ليfor me
إذاwhen اعتزَلَتthey drew away إلاَّexcept الدُّعاءَprayer جُنودُtroops
So I spent the night beholding death's host, and I had,
When they drew away, no troops but prayer.
تَلاعَبُtoy بيwith me أمواجُwaves of بَحْرٍa sea كأنَّهاas though they were
شَواهِقُtowering peaks of بَرٍّdry land تَنْثَنيbending وتَمِيدُand swaying
The waves of a sea toy with me, as though they were
Towering peaks on land, bending and swaying.
فإنْand if أنْقَلِبْI return منهاfrom them إلىto الأرضِthe land واطئاًtreading
علىupon التُّرْبِthe soil يوماًone day إنَّنيindeed I لسعيدُam surely happy
And if I return from them to land, treading
Upon the soil one day, I shall indeed be happy.
