خُذاtake, you two مِنَfrom العَيشِlife فالأعمارُfor lifespans فانيةٌare fleeting
والدَّهْرُand time مُنصَرِفٌpassing away والعَيشُand life مُنقَرِضُcoming to an end
Take your share of life, you two, for lives are fleeting;
Take from life, for ages are fleeting,
And time is passing away, and life is coming to an end.
And time is turning, and life is fading.
فيin حاملِthe bearer of الكأسِthe cup منin place of بَدْرِthe full moon of الدُّجَىthe darkness خَلَفٌa substitute
وفيand in المُدامَةِthe wine منin place of شَمْسِthe sun of الضُّحَىthe morning عِوَضُa replacement
In the cupbearer is a substitute for the full moon of night,
In the cup-bearer at dawn lingers
And in the wine, a replacement for the morning sun.
A replacement for the sun at noon.
كأنَّas though نَجْمَthe star-cluster of الثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiades كَفُّthe palm of ذيone possessing كَرَمٍgenerosity
مَبسوطَةٌoutstretched للعَطاياfor giving gifts ليسَnot تَنقَبِضُdrawing closed
The Pleiades are like a generous person's palm,
As though the Pleiades were the palm
Outstretched to bestow gifts, never closing.
Of a generous one, opened, not closed.
دارَتْwent round عليناamong us كؤوسُcups of الخَمْرِwine مُترَعَةًfilled to the brim
وللدُّجىand darkness had عارِضٌa cloud فيin الجَوِّthe sky مُعتَرِضُstretching across
Brimming cups of wine went round among us,
The wine cups circled around us brimming,
And a cloud of darkness stretched across the sky,
And opposing the darkness, intercepting in the air.
حتَّىuntil رَأَيتُI saw نُجومَthe stars of اللَّيلِthe night غائِرَةًsinking
كأنَّهُنَّas though they were عيونٌeyes حَشْوُهاtheir contents رَمَضُburning pain
Until I saw the stars of night sinking,
Until I saw the stars of night hidden
As though they were eyes filled with burning pain.
As though they were eyes filled with sleep.
