O butcher of Bab al-Sham, how did you find me,

while you are a camel for slaughter between my fang and my claw?

I see you plundered poetry, then hid it

from people, as a frightened, watchful man would.

You kept your distance from poetry's cattle, with knives

turned toward it, yet felt neither scruple nor guilt.

And when the masters ran in the light of its dawn,

you stumbled in its pitch-dark fog.

You ran along brevity's most direct path,

and the finest course through the gold of words.

And you claim that the poetry you possess has revealed,

through its beauties, an eloquent speaker in you.

Why, then, does other people's poetry fill our eyes,

while your poetry among poems is the elusive ‘Anqa bird?
