لاmay not درّflow درُّmilk; bounty بنيthe sons of رباحRabah إنّهمindeed they are
لا درّ درُّ بني رباح إنّهم
مثلlike الفساa fart هبّتblew عليهupon it رياحwinds
مثل الفسا هبّت عليه رياح
May no bounty flow from Rabah's sons! They are
No gems dropped by the Banu Reb'ah; they are
like a fart upon which winds have blown.
Like debris blown by the winds
قومa people عنافقهمtheir lower-lip tufts إذاwhen ماemphatic particle ألبستgrow thick with hair
قوم عنافقهم إذا ما ألبست
مثلlike اللحىbeards ولحاهمand their beards أرباحmonkeys
مثل اللحى ولحاهم أرباح
A people whose lower-lip tufts, when grown thick,
A hypocritical people, when you clothe them
are like beards, while their beards are monkeys.
Like beards though their gain is unlawful
