It goes out early for another, seeking whatever sustenance is allotted,

through it sometimes prospering, and sometimes coming away empty.

It sets out while darkness’s mantle is still ash-gray,

and the horizon is neither black nor saffron-dyed.

Dawn unravels that mantle, though it is tightly woven.

In the water it catches those that cannot be caught,

and watches the form that cannot be discerned.

Can anything escape its gaze or outstrip it,

when all of it is eyes that never blink,

    until daybreak betrays it

and limpid blue death enfolds it?

    Its innards, beyond all doubt, glitter;

they dart while doom closes tightly over them.

Its pupils are a wall encircling them.

It comes back with things like glittering knives,

    and like half-swords that flash.
