نَفْسيmy soul فِداؤُكَyour ransom هادياًas a guide
نَفْسي فِداؤُكَ هادياً
تُهدَىare guided بهاby it عُصَبُbands الرِّفاقِthe companions
تُهدَى بها عُصَبُ الرِّفاقِ
My soul be your ransom—a guide
My soul is your ransom, O guide
by which bands of companions are led.
By which the comrades' allegiance is guided
كالبدرِlike the full moon يُحسَبُhe is thought فيin التَّمَاthe fullness (first part)
كالبدرِ يُحسَبُ في التَّمَا
مِcompletion of 'fullness' وقدand already تَرَفَّعَhe rose high بالمَحاقِthrough waning or extinction
مِ وقد تَرَفَّعَ بالمَحاقِ
Like the full moon, he is thought complete,
Like the full moon it is considered in the dark night
though he has risen high through waning.
And it rose high above the horizons
أوفَىعلىhe stood high above طُرُقٍroads أقاhe remained (first part)
أوفَىعلى طُرُقٍ أقا
مَcompletion of 'remained' فَليسَso he is not يُؤذَنُgiven permission بانطِلاقِto depart
مَ فَليسَ يُؤذَنُ بانطِلاقِ
He stood high above roads and remained,
It fulfilled over roads I walked
so he is given no leave to depart.
So there is no permission for departure
مُتوشِّحاًwearing as a sash فيهin it دماًblood
مُتوشِّحاً فيه دماً
كَحمائلِlike the baldrics of البِيْضِthe gleaming swords الرِّقاقِthe slender ones
كَحمائلِ البِيْضِ الرِّقاقِ
Wearing blood there as a sash,
Wearing blood on it
like the baldrics of slender, gleaming swords.
Like the carriers of the fragile eggs
ومضارِعُand a rival of الجَوْزَاءِOrion ليat night (first part)
ومضارِعُ الجَوْزَاءِ لي
لاًcompletion of 'at night' فيin عُلوِّheight واتِّساقِand symmetry
لاً في عُلوِّ واتِّساقِ
And he rivals Orion at night,
And it competes with the beautiful women for me
in height and symmetry.
Rising in elevation and harmony
فكأنَّهso it is as though he وكأنَّهاand as though she
فكأنَّه وكأنَّها
إلفانِtwo lovers هَمَّاboth intended باعتِناقِto embrace
إلفانِ هَمَّا باعتِناقِ
So it is as though he and she were
So it is as if it and as if she
two lovers about to embrace.
