أَهوِنْhow insignificant! عليَّto me بعَبدِis Abd اللهAllah إنif غَضِباhe grows angry
فماfor there is no لهfor him عنديَfrom me العُتبَىappeasement إذاwhen عَتِباhe takes offense
How little Abd Allah matters to me if he grows angry!
For he shall have no amends from me when he takes offense.
كَسَوتُهI clothed him حَبَراتِpatterned robes المَدحِof praise مُذهَبةًgilded
وقلتُand I said قدindeed مُلِئَتْwas filled كَفِّيmy palm بهthrough him ذَهَباwith gold
I clothed him in gilded, patterned robes of praise.
And I said, 'Through him my palm has been filled with gold.'
وقدand indeed ضربْتُI struck بسيفٍwith a sword مُرهَفٍkeen-edged فنَباbut it glanced off
وقدand indeed قدحْتُI struck sparks بَزْندٍwith a fire-stick مُضرَمٍblazing فَخَباbut it went out
And I had struck with a keen-edged sword, but it glanced off.
And I had struck sparks with a blazing fire-stick, but it went out.
حتىuntil إذاwhen الإذنُpermission منto نَجواهhis private conversation قرَّبَنيbrought me near
ورفَّعَand lifted الحاجبُthe chamberlain الأستارَthe curtains والحُجُباand the veils
At last, when permission drew me close to his private conversation,
And the chamberlain lifted the curtains and veils,
وقفتُI stood بينbetween يَدَيthe two hands of نَشوانَone intoxicated منwith حُمُقٍfolly
أَصُبُّI pour فيinto أُذُنَيهhis two ears الزُّورَfalsehood والكَذباand lies
I stood before a man drunk on folly,
Pouring falsehood and lies into his ears.
إذاwhen وعَىhe understood المدحَthe praise لمdid not يطرَبْfeel delight لبهجتِهin its beauty
وإنyet if تصافَعَslapped one another قَومٌpeople عندَهin his presence طَرِباhe was delighted
When he understood the praise, he took no delight in its beauty;
Yet if people slapped one another in his presence, he was delighted.
