أهدتْshe sent as a gift علىdespite نأيِthe remoteness of المحلِّthe dwelling وقدand already
أهدتْ على نأيِ المحلِّ وقد
أنأىdrove far away التصبُّرَpatient endurance طولُthe length of هِجْرتِهاher estrangement
أنأى التصبُّرَ طولُ هِجْرتِها
She sent, though her dwelling was far away and
her long estrangement had driven patience away,
نَارَنْجَةًa bitter orange منهاfrom her استُعِيرَwas borrowed لهاfor it
نَارَنْجَةً منها استُعِيرَ لها
ماthat which أُلبِسَتit was clothed in منof حُسنِthe beauty of بَهجتِهاher radiance
ما أُلبِسَت من حُسنِ بَهجتِها
a bitter orange, for which was borrowed from her
the lovely radiance in which it was clothed.
فشُعاعُهاso its radiance منfrom نارِthe fire of وجنتِهاher cheek
فشُعاعُها من نارِ وجنتِها
ونسيمُهاand its wafting scent منfrom عِطرِthe perfume of نكهتِهاher breath
ونسيمُها من عِطرِ نكهتِها
So its radiance comes from the fire of her cheek,
and its wafting scent from the perfume of her breath.
وكأنand as though ماwhat يُخفيهconceals it باطُنهاits interior
وكأن ما يُخفيه باطُنها
ماwhat أضمرَتْshe concealed منof سُوءِthe evil of غَدرتِهاher treachery
ما أضمرَتْ من سُوءِ غَدرتِها
And what its interior conceals seems like
the wicked treachery she kept hidden.
وحكىand resembled اخضرارٌa green tinge شابَmingled with حُمْرَتَهاits redness
وحكى اخضرارٌ شابَ حُمْرَتَها
قَرصَthe pinching of الأكفِّthe hands أديمَthe skin of وجنَتِهاher cheek
قَرصَ الأكفِّ أديمَ وجنَتِها
And the green tinge mingling with its red recalled
hands pinching the skin of her cheek.
وأتتكَand it came to you مُكْمَلةًmade complete محاسنُهاits beauties
وأتتكَ مُكْمَلةً محاسنُها
تختالُit struts فيin أثوابِthe robes of زينتِهاits finery
تختالُ في أثوابِ زينتِها
And it came to you, its beauties perfected,
strutting in the robes of its finery.
فشَعارُهاso its undergarment صُفْرُyellow-hued اللُّجَيْنِsilver ومنand of
فشَعارُها صُفْرُ اللُّجَيْنِ ومن
ذَهَبٍgold مَصوغٍwrought ثوبُthe robe of بِذْلَتِهاits everyday wear
ذَهَبٍ مَصوغٍ ثوبُ بِذْلَتِها
For its undergarment is yellow-hued silver, and of
wrought gold is its everyday robe.
تُهديit sends إلىto الأرواحِthe souls منfrom بُعْدٍafar
تُهدي إلى الأرواحِ من بُعْدٍ
تُحَفَgifts of السُّرورِjoy بطيبِwith the sweetness of نَشْرتِهاits wafted fragrance
تُحَفَ السُّرورِ بطيبِ نَشْرتِها
It sends to souls, from afar,
gifts of joy with its sweetly wafting fragrance.
ويصونُهاand protects it مسرَىthe wafting of روائِحِهاits scents
ويصونُها مسرَى روائِحِها
منfrom أنthat تباشَرهاyou touch it بشمَّتِهاby sniffing it
من أن تباشَرها بشمَّتِها
And the wafting of its scents protects it
from your touching it when you sniff it.
فاشربْso drink عليهاbeside it منof شقيقتِهاits sister
فاشربْ عليها من شقيقتِها
فيin نعتِthe qualities of ريّاهاits fragrance وصيغتِهاand its form
في نعتِ ريّاها وصيغتِها
So drink beside it of its sister,
alike in the qualities of fragrance and form.
واعطِفْand turn عِنانَthe rein of النفسِthe soul عنaway from فِكَرٍthoughts
واعطِفْ عِنانَ النفسِ عن فِكَرٍ
راحتْit became معذَّبةًtormented بصحبتِهاby their company
راحتْ معذَّبةً بصحبتِها
And turn your soul's rein away from thoughts
whose company has left it tormented.
Sol 6.1
