    رواحُها للمَجدِ وابتكارُها

    And a band of youths through whom their standing rises,

    Their evening journeys and early departures are for glory;

    And whatever their souls desire is their watchword.

    Their moons grew joyous for an outing,

    تعومُ في غُدرانِها أطيارُها

    So they headed for a land whose reaches were embroidered.

    Its birds swim in its pools;

    Its trees were adorned with its blossoms,

    And its rivers were sandalwood-tinted by their swelling.

    نِجارُ خَطيِّ القَنا نِجارُها

    Their dwellings were fortified with hope-inspiring weapons;

    Their stock is that of Khatt's spear-shafts.

    Their skins are guarded for their beauty,

    As maidens are guarded, their veils let fall.

    أحسنُ من مَنظرِها أخبارُها

    Yellow-hued, yet their yellowness has not marred them;

    Their tales are finer than their appearance.

    أَفْتَكُ من كِبارِها صغارُها

    They launch fair missiles whose effects are ugly;

    Their small ones are deadlier than their large.

    So I do not know which of them are best.

    Their fire scorches whatever crosses the air,

    طاعتُه لفِتيَةٍ تختارُها

    Though no sparks fly in their wake.

    It obeys a band of youths who choose them;

    They strike wherever the youths' eyes alight.

    Until, when the sun's blaze died down,

    And its waist-wrap yellowed from its western horizon,

    And it was time to send the water-seeking flock back,

    Their doom lay red upon the youths' hands.

    Then they felled birds whose ragged garments were embroidered,

    In robes whose buttons had been fastened tight.

    Their gold laughs amid their silver,

    And in their night's blackness their daylight laughs,

    Like a meadow whose blossoms intermingle.
