An ardent longing born of you stubbornly prolongs itself,

And a burning anguish that the stirrings of longing reveal.

So passion reveals it if I set about concealing it,

And tears unfold it if I spend the night folding it away.

How many a white gazelle among the women in litters, whose glances

At times extinguish her breaths and at times revive them.

And a tear, bewildered in the cheek's redness,

As though its flow were the merriment of tawny wine.

They are gazelles: if startled by imminent parting,

They graze on hearts with glances in succession.

I seek forgetfulness, their swaying bends my heart back.

I do not restrain tears when their torrents are about to flow,

And the soul's wishes have grown far beyond its reach.

May you be watered in radiant Mosul—what a city!—

By a downpour mirroring the generosity of its people.

Shall I lament life there, or mourn for

Its days, or be consoled for its nights?

A land for which whoever leaves it yearns,

And whoever draws near it praises life within it.

Soft-soiled, sweet of breath, and smiling,

Almost trembling with pride throughout its reaches.

The Tigris cleaves the blossoms of its gardens,

Like a broad sword blade with polished edges.

I cannot bear being away from it if I go far, even if

I were given the world and all it holds in exchange for its shade.

The home of a people whose bounty forever takes the place

Of the clouds when their showers grow miserly.

And a great tree, towering with the branches of the Azd,

Time perishes, but its endeavors do not perish.

No calamity has befallen glory and eminence

Without being adorned by the bounty of the sons of Fahd.

Indeed, noble virtues are traits worn as a robe

By Abu al-Fawaris, so they swaggered proudly in him.

Gifts: whenever their evening showers set forth

From his two palms, their morning showers come pouring down.

And an aspiration that never ceases, through all time, to run

With the stars in their highest courses.

And a resolve by which pitch-black night is folded away,

As though dawn were a fragment of its radiance.

His bounties have embraced the world; his aspiration

Is to aid its supplicants or set its captives free.

His hopeful petitioner gains his wishes before humbling himself,

While those who hope in kings turn back in despair.

O Abu al-Fawaris, how many blessings you have bestowed!

In bounty, those near and far are alike.

And how many a robe of noble virtue you have donned,

Grand, yet subtle in its meanings.

Traits of yours put the gardens to shame when

Fresh blossoms smile within their haunts.

As though rain were a trait among their traits,

Or death a name among their names.

I shall surely forgive the days, since I have been spared

Their evils through your gracious deeds.

O house of Fahd, there dwells within your abodes

A blessing whose pure essence sustains life's serenity.

For your might is safety for its fearful ones,

Just as your bounty quenches its thirsty ones.

Indeed, noble virtues have given you their reins,

So no one else among mankind possesses them.
