May God shield us from the envier's wishes against you,

And defend you for the sake of ancestral generosity,

And spread shade over you for your bounty,

For through you we dwell in far-reaching shade.

You have been bled—may no worry beset you in this,

Nor may you be stripped of the robe of good fortune.

Blood that the hopeful one wished he could ransom

With the water of his face, or the blood of his jugular vein.

And a hand—if there were a fitting recompense for it—

We would shield it with the brocade of our cheeks,

So it would be healed without a wound,

While we would bear the iron's touch.
