منسحبٌtrailing مئزرهhis waist-wrapper والمطرفُand the bordered cloak
A lover, enthralled by youth's radiant charms,
his waist-wrapper and bordered cloak trailing.
يُرغِمُhumbles مَنْwhoever يَلْحىreproaches ومَنْand whoever يُعَنِّفُrebukes
تَشوقُهstirs his longing حتَّىuntil يَكادَhe almost يَتْلفُperishes
He humbles whoever reproaches him and whoever rebukes him.
He is stirred to longing until he nearly perishes
خَدٌّa cheek أَسيلٌsmooth وقَوامٌand a figure أَهيَفُslender
فصاحباهُso his two companions فِتْيَةٌyoung men وقَرقَفُand wine
by a smooth cheek and a slender figure.
So his two companions are young men and wine,
وعُدتَّاهand his two resources سابحٌa swift steed ومُرهَفُand a keen blade
هاجَstirred هَواهhis desire الدَّيرُthe monastery والمُستَشرَفُand the lookout
and his two resources a swift steed and a keen blade.
The monastery and the lookout stirred his desire,

تُرْبٌsoil صَحيحٌwholesome وهواءٌand air مُدْنَفُlanguishing
and its garden, embroidered and striped:
wholesome soil and languid air.
للعَيْنِfor the eye فيهwithin it أيَّwhichever وَجهٍdirection تُصْرَفُit is turned
بِساطُa carpet of منثورٍstock flowers نَداهits dew يَنطِفُdrips
Whichever way the eye is turned within it,
there is a carpet of stock flowers, dripping with dew,
لهit has منof الآسِmyrtle الجَنيِّfresh-picked رَفْرَفُa fringe
وجَدْوَلٌand a stream لُجَّتُهُits deep water لاnot تَنْزِفُruns dry
with a fringe of fresh-picked myrtle.
And a stream whose deep waters never run dry,
تَصقُلُpolish مَتْنَيهِits two flanks الرِّياحُthe winds العُصَّفُgusting
حيتانهُits fish دانيةٌnear at hand تَلقَّفُsnap up food
its two flanks polished by the gusting winds.
Its fish are close at hand, snapping up food.
فماؤُهُso its water مُرَوَّقٌclarified مُنَطَّفُpearl-studded
مِثلَlike السَّرابِa mirage افتَرَّsmiled open عنهto reveal it النَفْنَفthe open expanse
So its water is clarified and pearl-studded,
like a mirage the open expanse smiles to reveal.
فهيso they علىover ساحاتِهِits reaches تُرَفْرِفُflutter
كلٌّeach بِسَهْمِfor the arrow of حَتفِهِits doom مُستَهْدَفُa target
So they flutter over its reaches,
each a target for the arrow of its doom.
ألحفتُهُنَّI covered them والحِمامُand death ألحَفُmore enveloping
شبَّهتُهI likened it بالدِّرْعِto a coat of mail حينَwhen تُرصَفُit is linked together
I covered them; death is more enveloping still.
I likened it to a coat of mail as its links are joined.
بهاin it عُيونٌeyes لَحظُهُنَّtheir gaze أوْطَفُthick-lashed

In it are eyes whose gaze is thick-lashed;
water strikes them, yet they remain unharmed.
ثمَّthen تَلاهاfollowed it قَصَبٌreeds مُجوَّفُhollow

مثلَlike القَناspear-shafts ثَقَّفَهُstraightened it المُثقِّفُthe shaft-straightener
Then hollow reeds followed it,
like spear-shafts straightened by the shaft-straightener.

مثلَlike الهلالِthe crescent وهيand it منهthan it أنحَفُthinner
And each curved hook described in connection with it
is like the crescent, though thinner than it.
منamong صِفَتَيْهاits two qualities الرِّفْقُgentleness والتَّعَجرُفُand harshness
فلمso it did not تَزَلْcease تُرسَلُbeing cast ثمthen تُخطَفُbeing snatched up
Its two traits are gentleness and harshness.
So it kept being cast out, then snatched up,

and we bring together their scattered numbers,
as though they were daggers that bend.
أحلَّmade lawful ليfor me عذابَهُنَّtheir torment المُصحَفُthe Qur'an
وليسand there is no عنfrom صَرْفِthe stroke of الحِمامِdeath مصرَفُescape
The Qur'an made their torment lawful for me,
and there is no escape from death's stroke.
