ومنزلٍand a dwelling رَقَّgrew gentle بهِin it الهواءُthe air
ومنزلٍ رَقَّ بهِ الهواءُ
وطابَand was pleasant للشَّرْبِfor the drinkers بهِin it الثَّواءُthe stay
وطابَ للشَّرْبِ بهِ الثَّواءُ
And a dwelling where the air grew delicate,
And a dwelling where the air grew gentle,
Where lingering to drink was sweet—
And staying there was pleasant for the drinkers.
بَنِيَّةٍa building ماno حولَهاaround it بِناءُa building
بَنِيَّةٍ ما حولَها بِناءُ
كماas أُقيمَwas set upright فيin يدٍa hand إناءُa vessel
كما أُقيمَ في يدٍ إناءُ
A little structure with no building round it,
A building with no other building around it,
Like a vessel poised within a hand.
Like a vessel set upright in a hand.
تَركُضُgallops فيهin it فرسٌa horse دهماءُblack
تَركُضُ فيه فرسٌ دهماءُ
تَكنُفُهاsurrounds it عَجاجَةٌa dust cloud بَيضاءُwhite
تَكنُفُها عَجاجَةٌ بَيضاءُ
Inside it gallops a jet-black mare,
A black horse gallops within it,
Enfolded by a white cloud of dust.
Surrounded by a white cloud of dust.
تجريruns فإنand if أعوزَهاis unavailable to it الفَضَاءُopen space
تجري فإن أعوزَها الفَضَاءُ
مَيدانُهاits course وجسمُهاand its body سَواءُthe same
مَيدانُها وجسمُها سَواءُ
She runs; and should open space fail her,
It runs; and if open space fails it,
Her field and her body are equal in measure.
Its course and its body are one and the same.
يَخفُرُهاguards it جارٌa neighbor لهhe has ضَوْضَاءُclamor
يَخفُرُها جارٌ له ضَوْضَاءُ
كِلاهُماboth of them لمعشرٍfor a company نَعماءُa blessing
كِلاهُما لمعشرٍ نَعماءُ
A clamorous neighbor stands guard over her;
A clamorous neighbor guards it;
Together, they are a boon to the company:
Both are a blessing to a company.
يومُa day سرورٍof joy ماno بهin it خَفاءَobscurity
يومُ سرورٍ ما به خَفاءَ
وليلةٌand a night مُسْفِرَةٌbright غَرَّاءُradiant
وليلةٌ مُسْفِرَةٌ غَرَّاءُ
A day of joy whose joy is no secret,
A day of joy, with nothing obscure about it,
And a radiant, resplendent night.
And a bright, radiant night.
رَخاؤُهاits gentle breeze إذwhen وَدَّعَتit bade farewell رَخاءُcomfort
رَخاؤُها إذ وَدَّعَت رَخاءُ
تَبرُدُgrow cool منfrom نسيمِهاits breeze الأحشاءُthe inward parts
تَبرُدُ من نسيمِها الأحشاءُ
Her gentleness, even as she bade farewell, was ease itself;
As it bade farewell, its gentle breeze brought comfort;
Her breeze cools the very inward parts—
Its breeze cools the inward parts.
غُرَّةُa shining brow دَهرٍof an age كلُّهall of it ظَلماءُdarkness
غُرَّةُ دَهرٍ كلُّه ظَلماءُ
The bright brow-blaze of an age all darkness.
The shining brow of an age that is all darkness.
