حمراءُa red one لمdid not تَكذِبْlie ولمand did not تَصدُقِtell the truth
حمراءُ لم تَكذِبْ ولم تَصدُقِ
لهاit has لِسانٌa tongue قَطُّever لمdid not يَنْطِقِِspeak
لها لِسانٌ قَطُّ لم يَنْطِقِِ
A red one that has neither lied nor told the truth;
Red, who did not lie nor tell the truth
it has a tongue that has never spoken.
She has a silent tongue that did not speak
يَفْرُقُهاfears it العالِمُthe learned man لكنَّهاbut it
يَفْرُقُها العالِمُ لكنَّها
قَطُّever منof العالِمِthe learned man لمdid not تَفَرَقِfear
قَطُّ من العالِمِ لم تَفَرَقِ
The learned man fears it, yet it
The scholar distinguishes her, but she
has never feared the learned man.
Is silent from the scholar, did not distinguish
يُزْهِرُglows فيin ذيsomething possessing أربعٍfour مُقْعَدٌa cripple
يُزْهِرُ في ذي أربعٍ مُقْعَدٌ
كالشَّمْسِlike the sun إذwhen تُزْهِرُshines فيin المشرِقِthe east
كالشَّمْسِ إذ تُزْهِرُ في المشرِقِ
A cripple glows within something four-legged,
There blossoms in the quadruped
like the sun when it shines in the east.
Like the sun when it blossoms in the east
تَرىyou see بهin it الجَمْرَthe embers إذاwhen ماan emphatic particle صَفاbecame clear
تَرى به الجَمْرَ إذا ما صَفا
يُشرِقُshines مِثلَlike الذَّهَبِgold المُشرِقِgleaming
يُشرِقُ مِثلَ الذَّهَبِ المُشرِقِ
In it you see the embers, when clear,
You see in it embers when it is clear
shining like gleaming gold.
It shines like gilded gold shining
جَمرَتُهits ember تُشرِقُshines منfrom عَبْرَتيmy tear
جَمرَتُه تُشرِقُ من عَبْرَتي
وحَرُّهand its heat منfrom قلبيَmy heart المُقْلِقِdisquieting
وحَرُّه من قلبيَ المُقْلِقِ
Its ember draws its radiance from my tear,
Its embers shine from my tears
and its heat from my disquieting heart.
And its heat from my disturbing heart
إذاwhen بَداappeared نَحوَكَtoward you شبَّهْتَهُyou likened it
إذا بَدا نَحوَكَ شبَّهْتَهُ
بقَهْوَةٍto wine فيin قَدَحٍa cup أزرَقِblue
بقَهْوَةٍ في قَدَحٍ أزرَقِ
When it appears before you, you liken it
When it appears to you, you likened it
to wine in a blue cup.
