    Fate has dealt justly with you after its tyranny,

    yet in you I see Fate’s tyranny and its justice.

    So give me wine like a bride, whom the wa—

    —ter has clothed in a sash of bubbles and a necklace.

    وثَمِلْنا فكان خدُّكَ وَرْدَا

    We had grown thirsty, and your saliva was our draught;

    and we grew drunk, and your cheek became a rose.

    God brought our company together, and we wished

    there were a wall between the dawn and night.
