And a lodging where I alighted early in the morning,

    Quaffing wine in its shade.

There you see a battle in plain sight,

And a cloud of dust stirred up around it:

Two shells joined together side by side,

    One of them denied stillness.

    Neither lacks small pearls,

Which their warfare sends flying as dust,

In a place that arrests the gaze.

It lines the visitors' eyes with its dust as kohl,

Until it turns their lashes white.

So we kept drinking it by day,

Deep red, taken for pomegranate blossom,

While the wind's blows made skin bleed.

In our war, we were shown the free men as foes.

Until, when pitch-black night grew oppressive,

And its darkness let the curtains fall,

And snow scattered there in a flurry,

As when you send cotton flying and it flies,

It was both light and fire for us there.
