ولي خلة أرعى لها العهد صائفا
ولستand I do not أراعيobserve فيin الشتاءwinter لهاto her عهداa pledge
ولست أراعي في الشتاء لها عهدا
I have a close companion with whom I keep faith in summer,
I have a beloved I tend to in summer,
But in winter I keep no pledge to her.
Yet I make no such pact in winter's pall.
يذمcondemn الندامىthe drinking companions العيشlife عندupon فراقهاparting from her
يذم الندامى العيش عند فراقها
فإنbut if وصلتshe joins them نالواthey attain بهاthrough her عيشةa life رغداof ease
فإن وصلت نالوا بها عيشة رغدا
The drinking companions curse life when parted from her;
When parted, life brings lament from lovers,
But if she joins them, through her they gain a life of ease.
Rejoined, those lovers find life blissful all.
غنيناwe were content بهاwith her مقرورةchilled الجسمof body صوغتwere fashioned
غنينا بها مقرورة الجسم صوغت
سرابيلهاher robes والقيظwhile the summer heat ملتهبblazing جداvery intensely
سرابيلها والقيظ ملتهب جدا
We were content with her, chilled of body; fashioned were
Her frame so slender when adorned with robes
Her robes, while the summer heat blazed fiercely.
As scorching summer smolders, hot and raw
تمسtouches يدthe hand الساقيof the cupbearer الأغنّthe nasal-voiced بزالهاher spigot
تمس يد الساقي الأغنّ بزالها
فتمنحهso she grants him طيباfragrance وتمنحهand she grants him وداaffection
فتمنحه طيبا وتمنحه ودا
The nasal-voiced cupbearer's hand touches her spigot,
She bids the cupbearer reach out his hand
So she grants him fragrance and grants him affection.
Granting him scent and affection as well.
