You disparaged your crop for fear of my demands,

And the crop is the gift of a blameless year.

So may no night-faring cloud from al-Jawza pass it by,

Weeping over it with tears that do not stream,

Like pearls, sparing the fortunate whenever

Its necklaces scatter, and hostile to every luckless soul,

Until you see it, its supports already bowed,

As though accustomed to bowing and reverence.

Or a vast army of God's hosts, spread abroad,

Like little fingers, with patterned breasts.

It occupies a province's breadth; if it is swept

By the east wind, it is left spread across a province's sky.

It never launches its raid, though weak in striking power,

Without overrunning the preserves of proud, noble lords.

It lays upon the grain, at the highest points of its growth,

    Breasts engraved like signet rings.

When it takes wing, it renders the earth destitute,

And entrusts the soil with a brood by no means lacking.

Or a firebrand, kindled like a meteor in the sky,

Flying through the crop, both standing and piled up.

When it heads for the crop, the wind drives it, raging

From every quarter, urging it to blaze.

Red strands from its tresses appear before your eyes,

As dawn appears with reddened leading edges,

Until you become a brother to poverty and destitution,

Empty at heart of patience and resignation.

You withheld grain; even had you given, unasked,

The very kernels of hearts, you would not have escaped blame.
