O Abu Ishaq, may God increase

    the beauty of your joy.

And may your hater fall into grief,

    long-lasting, at your happiness.

    May God fill with seekers

of bounty the gates of your homes.

    Time shines, and its radiance

    comes only from your light.

And I see the days withholding

    only someone equal to you.

I said to the envier, "Be patient,"

when he sought to reach your mountain's height.

You are rain to your allies,

and a lion to whoever provokes you.

So all mankind is in your evenings' coolness

or in the heat of your noonday.

None tells mankind of your glories

like one who knows you well.

You built your eminence with pre-dawn effort

in its pursuit, and with your early rising.

Standing forth for praise, you raise it high,

though your supporter is far away.

    However you unsheathe your pens,

they suffice in place of your sharp swords.

It is as though Time itself has written

    what lies between your lines:

wonders on which the eye grazes,

amid the embroidery of your patterned cloth.

We have enough of your abundant generosity

and of the overflow of your seas:

we have received from it what exceeds

the thanks of even one most grateful to you,

    whether yellow dinars from you

    or your yellow wines.

So add to your kindness a fragrance

you find pleasing from your incense.

Live on; may the clouds' rain never fail

to reach your palaces' wide expanses.
