عزاءً يا أبا الفضل

عزاءً يا أبا الفضل

فأنت الجبل الأعلى

فأنت الجبل الأعلى

Take comfort, O Abu al-Fadl,

Solace, O Abu al-Fadl,

for you are the loftiest mountain.

For you are the highest mountain,

وإن جارعلى أهلك

وإن جارعلى أهلك

صرف الدهر بالجلى

صرف الدهر بالجلى

And even if your family has been wronged

And if fate has wronged your family,

by time's vicissitudes with a grievous calamity,

Time’s vicissitudes are clear.

فما امتد بك العمر

فما امتد بك العمر

فأنت الدين والدنيا

فأنت الدين والدنيا

so long as your life endures,

So neither did life stretch out for you,

you are faith and this world.

For you are religion and worldly life both,

ولا عتب على الدهر

ولا عتب على الدهر

وإن جار وإن أدنى

وإن جار وإن أدنى

And there is no reproaching time,

Nor is there blame on fate,

even if it wrongs and even if it brings low,

Be it unkind or draw near.

إذا ما نثر العقد

إذا ما نثر العقد

وأبقى الدرة الوسطى

وأبقى الدرة الوسطى

if it has scattered the necklace

When the necklace is unstrung

and preserved the central pearl.

And the central pearl remains
