تَأَمَّلْexamine carefully جَديدَthe new ones of الكُتْبِthe books وابدَأْand begin بِرَثِّهاwith their worn-out ones
تَأَمَّلْ جَديدَ الكُتْبِ وابدَأْ بِرَثِّها
وكُنْand be ضامناًa guardian أرواحَthe spirits of ماwhat تتضَمَّنُthey contain
وكُنْ ضامناً أرواحَ ما تتضَمَّنُ
Examine the new books, and begin with their worn-out ones.
Examine the new books and begin with their inheritance
And be a guardian of the spirits of what they contain.
And be the guarantor of the souls they contain
فكَمْfor many a مُخلقٍworn-out one منهاamong them أفادَyielded بَديعةًa marvel
فكَمْ مُخلقٍ منها أفادَ بَديعةً
وللذَّهَبِand for gold الإبريزِpure فيin التُّرْبِthe soil مَعْدِنِa mine
وللذَّهَبِ الإبريزِ في التُّرْبِ مَعْدِنِ
For many a worn-out book among them has yielded a marvel.
For how many creations among them have offered wonderful benefit
And pure gold has its mine in the soil.
And for pure gold in the dust a mine
