وقِيدَ لدَيْنا واثِبٌ ومُخالِسُ
Whenever we call Lāḥiq and Muʿāniq,
If we are called to pursue and embrace later,
and Wāthib and Mukhālis are led before us,
With a leaping zeal and an ardent companion;
فذلكthen that يَومٌa day جانبَforsook السَّعدُgood fortune سِرْبَهits herd

وقُوبِلَ بالنَّحْسِ الظِّباءُ الكَوانِسُ
that is a day when good fortune forsakes its herd,
That day fortune will have averted its gaze,
and the gazelles sheltering in their lairs meet with ill fortune.
And misfortune's raven-haired brides will draw near.

The hides of the wild beasts amid his hounds seem,
As though the hides of beasts amid their hounds
with their necks and nostrils now bloodied,
Were bloodied by their chargers and their stallions.

like sandalwood-scented shirts whose necklines have been torn,
The pleated shirts - their pockets will be torn
with saffron sprinkled into them by brides.
And their golden blossoms stained by maidens fair.
