    بما ذاعَ في الناس من شُكرِه

    O you who turn praise away from all others

    through the praise of you spread among the people;

    and O defender of wronged literature,

    when people hold back from defending it!

    I see the Eid robe of honor has been overlooked,

    though it used to come in the festival’s wake.

    جَنى الوردِ أزرَتْ بمُحمَرِّه

    So grant me a red one: should it vie

    with picked roses, it would put their red to shame;

    إلى خالصِ التِّبرِ في نَجْره

    or else a yellow one, akin

    to pure, unworked gold in its nature;

    or else a white one, like silver,

    surpassing its purest kind in whiteness.

    Whenever a proud man uses it to adorn

    his trousers, he grows prouder still.

    And its ends reach the ground

    when it is wrapped around his waist.

    And concealment sets the shirt against it,

    but gratitude brings it out from its cover.

    Whenever the envious man sees it, he sees

    the flash of daggers at his throat.

    For you are the generous one: unceasingly

    the clouds draw sustenance from his sea.

    For you are peerless in generosity,

    and you are the hope of your age.
