وكانand was مُضيئاًradiant وَجهُهُhis face فيin المَحافِلthe gatherings
Ibn Hamza's wife has surely blackened his face,
The wedding of Ibn Hamza's son has darkened his face,
though his face once shone in gatherings.
Though it was bright at gatherings.
وماand what حيلَةُrecourse الأعمىthe blind man القبيحِugly إذاwhen التَوتْturned
عليهagainst him حِسانُthe beauties among الآنساتِthe gracious women العقائِلِthe noblewomen
What recourse has the ugly blind man, when
What can the ugly blind man do when
the beauties among gracious noblewomen turn against him?
The glances of the doe-eyed girls converge on him?
وكانand he was خبيثاًwicked قبلَbefore ذاكَthat مُخاتِلاًdeceitful
فأَنسَتْهُso she made him forget أفعالَthe deeds of الخَبيثِthe wicked one المُخاتِلِthe deceiver
He had been wicked and deceitful before that,
He was wicked before, a fraud,
yet she made him forget the wicked deceiver's deeds.
But his wicked, fraudulent acts made him forgettable.
أرادَتْshe intended قضاءَfulfillment of الحَقِّthe duty يَوْماًone day بِزَورِهاthrough her visit
ومأرَبَand a purpose of حَقٍّright شِيبَwas mingled منهاby her بباطِلِwith wrongdoing
One day she meant to fulfill a duty through her visit,
One day she wanted to destroy the truth with her lies
and a rightful purpose, which she mingled with wrongdoing.
And mix the pure truth with falsehood.
فسارَتْso she walked علىalong قَصْدِthe straight course of السَّبيلِthe road هُنيهَةًa little while
وماَلتْand she turned إلىtoward غُصنٍa branch منof البانِthe bān tree مائلِleaning
So she followed the road's straight course a little while,
So she set out with purpose on the path,
then turned toward a leaning branch of the bān tree.
Swaying to a branch of acacia.
فمرَّso passed لهاfor her يَوْمٌa day علىbeside النَّهْرِthe river صالحٌpleasant
غَريبٌrare منamong الأيامِdays حلوُsweet of الشَّمائلِdisposition
So a pleasant day passed for her beside the river,
A fine day passed her by the riverbank,
rare among days, sweet in its ways.
A stranger among days, beautiful in character.
يُعاطيoffers النَّدامىthe drinking companions طَرفُهاher gaze سِحْرَthe magic of بابلٍBabylon
وتأخُذُand she takes منfrom أيديِهمُtheir hands خَمْرَthe wine of بابلِBabylon
Her gaze offered the drinking companions Babylon's magic,
Her glances give the repentant the magic of Babylon,
and she took Babylon's wine from their hands,
And she takes the wine of Babylon from their hands.
إلىuntil أنthat قَضَتْshe fulfilled حَقَّthe due of الرِّجالِthe men وضَيَّعَتْand neglected
بباطِلهاthrough her wrongdoing حقَّthe due of النِّساءِthe women الثَّواكلِbereaved of children
until she gave the men their due and neglected
Until she destroyed the rights of men and ruined
the bereaved mothers' due through her wrongdoing.
The rights of the neglected women with her lies.
وعادَتْand she returned بِوَرْدِwith a rose ذابلِwithered in الوَرْدِthe bloom حائلٍfaded
بِعَضِّfrom the biting of الثَّناياthe front teeth لاnot بِعَضِّfrom the biting of الأناملِthe fingertips
And she returned with a rose whose bloom was withered and faded,
She returned with a withered bouquet,
from the biting of front teeth, not the biting of fingertips.
Grasping some petals, not hands.
فلمso she did not تَدْنُcome near منto شقِّrending الجيوبِthe neck openings ولمnor did تَغِضْbecome depleted
مَعَwith الشَّربِthe drinkers أسرابُflocks of الدُّموعِthe tears الهَوَامِلِfreely flowing
She never came near rending her neckline, nor were
She did not draw near to slit pockets or shed
flocks of streaming tears spent among the drinkers.
Tears with the drinking throngs wailing.
ولوand if صدَقَتْshe had been sincere لمnot تُلْقَbe found ثَكْلىa bereaved mother تَسلَّبتdonned mourning clothes

And had she been sincere, no bereaved mother would be found dressed in mourning
Had she been truthful, she would not have found desolate,
out of grief, in crimson ornaments and shifts.
Sorrow-stricken in the red slippers and anklets.
