برملِ مصرٍ عند طيب الغلس
Who denied sleep to my eye
The one who deprived my eyelids of sleep
In Egypt’s sands, in the sweet predawn gloom,
With the sands of Egypt at the time of sweet rest
وخالفand contradicted العادةthe custom فيin قولهمtheir saying
وخالف العادة في قولهم
إنthat الذيthe one who فيin الرملthe sand يمشيwalks نعسgrows drowsy
إن الذي في الرمل يمشي نعس
And contradicted their customary saying
And went against the norm in their saying
That whoever walks in sand grows drowsy?
That he who walks on the sand becomes sleepy
