Time knows neither the living nor the dead,

Time knows not the living from the dead,

whether hope within the soul betrayed them or favored them.

Whether the soul's hope still lives or is extinguished.

فنزه النفس عن مالٍ وعن أملٍ

فنزه النفس عن مالٍ وعن أملٍ

قد أتعباها ولا تجزع لما فاتا

قد أتعباها ولا تجزع لما فاتا

So free the soul from wealth and from hope,

So free your soul from possessions and from hope—

which have both wearied it, and do not grieve for what is gone.

They weary you, yet lament not what is lost.

فما لمن تتقاضاه منيته

فما لمن تتقاضاه منيته

إلا إلى ذلك الميقات ما قاتا

إلا إلى ذلك الميقات ما قاتا

For one whose death demands its due from him, there is

For he whose death is ordained receives nothing

only what sustains him until that appointed hour.

But respite until that fated moment comes.
