The reproachers said to me when I fell in love with him—
When the tormentor said to me, for loving him,
And part of the lovesick lover’s reply holds subtle wit—
With some of the youth's witty retort in it:

أيصبيك منه يا أخا الوجد ناظرٌ

مهنده ماض فقلت وسالف
“Does an eye of his enthrall you, O brother of passion,
"Does wakefulness waste you, O brother of passion, a watcher
Its Indian sword keen?” I said, “And a cheek, too.”
Whose sleep is passed?" I said: "Or one who discoursed."
