وافى المثال كما أردت فعدت من
إجلالهreverence for it عنديin my eyes أقومI rise وأقعدand I sit
إجلاله عندي أقوم وأقعد
The missive arrived as I wished; so I began, out of
The example came as I wished, so I stood
my reverence for it, to rise and sit.

ولكمand how often لثمتI kissed لهfor it الثرىthe dust فيin سجدةٍa prostration
ولكم لثمت له الثرى في سجدةٍ
وأعدتand I repeated it حتىuntil قيلit was said هذاthis هدهدa hoopoe
وأعدت حتى قيل هذا هدهد
And how often I kissed the dust for it in prostration,
And how often I kissed the ground in prostration
And repeated this until it was said, “This is a hoopoe.”
I was counted as the hoopoe bird
