The man of letters stole al-Warraq’s beauties
The author stole the beauty of the scribe’s work,
from what the poor fellow had penned in the scrolls.
From what the poor man had penned in his scrolls,
والصبحand dawn يتلوfollows المشترىJupiter فكأنهso it is as though
والصبح يتلو المشترى فكأنه
عريانnaked يمشيwalks فيin الدجاthe darkness بسراجwith a lamp
عريان يمشي في الدجا بسراج
And dawn follows Jupiter, as though it were
And the dawn recites the purchased wares, as though
a naked man walking in the darkness with a lamp.
