The lover forgot his love for her when

When the lover dismissed his passion

She withheld the phantom of sleep, and the two thought.

Thinking the phantom of his beloved was unkind

وحين زارته صد عنها

لما تعنت له تعنت

And when she visited him, he turned away from her;

And when she came to visit, he shunned her

When she took pains for him, he acted obstinately.

For she had stubbornly spurned him
