حكى هلالُ الأفقِ لما مضت

له ثلاثٌ واعتلى واستنار

The horizon's crescent resembled—when it was

The crescent narrated the horizon when it passed

three nights old and had risen high and shone—

It had three nights, ascended, and became illuminated

مرآة خد بعضها ظاهرٌ

مرآة خد بعضها ظاهرٌ

والبعض منها في غلاف عذار

والبعض منها في غلاف عذار

a cheek's mirror, part of it visible,

A mirror of a cheek, some of it apparent

and the rest of it within a sheath of facial down.

And some of it veiled in a cover of chastity
