أضحىhas become نسيمbreeze دمشقDamascus حياهاmay it greet her الحياthe rain
أضحى نسيم دمشق حياها الحيا
يمشيwalks الهويناgently فيin ظلالshades حماهاher sanctuary
يمشي الهوينا في ظلال حماها
The breeze of Damascus—may rain greet her—now
The breeze of Damascus has become its life,
walks gently in the shade of her sanctuary,
Walking lightly in the shade of its protection.
وكأنهand as though it فيin مائهاher water وهضابهاand her hills
وكأنه في مائها وهضابها
ماnot داسtrod upon إلاexcept أعيناeyes وجباهاand foreheads
ما داس إلا أعينا وجباها
and it is as though, amid her waters and hills,
As if in its waters and plateaus,
it has trodden only on eyes and foreheads.
It trod only our eyes and brows.
