أياO منwho تكلفtook upon yourself حبlove of العبيدthe slaves
أيا من تكلف حب العبيد
وذلكand that فيin العقلreason لاnot يجملis becoming
وذلك في العقل لا يجمل
O you who take upon yourself the love of slaves,
O you who impose the love of slaves,
And that is unbecoming in reason’s eyes;
That is not seemly in the mind.
فلوfor if بتماyou two spent the night عندaccording to قدريكماyour respective ranks
فلو بتما عند قدريكما
لبتyou would spend the night وأعلاكماand the higher of you two الأسفلthe lower one
لبت وأعلاكما الأسفل
For if you two spent the night according to your ranks,
If you fully realize your status,
You would lie with the higher of you two beneath.
I would refuse, and raise the lowly.
