إذا الدهر أعطاك المنى من ولايةٍ
فلاthen do not تتخذهاmake it حرفةًa trade لمعاشِfor a livelihood
فلا تتخذها حرفةً لمعاشِ
If time grants you your wishes through public office,
If fate grants you authority over others,
Then do not make it a trade for your livelihood.

ولاand do not تفتحنever open بابthe door الهداياgifts وعدهاand regard them
ولا تفتحن باب الهدايا وعدها
مطارthe flight فراشٍof moths لاnot مطارفَfine robes راشِof a briber
مطار فراشٍ لا مطارفَ راشِ
And never open the door to gifts; regard them as
Do not open the door of gifts and promises,
The flight of moths, not a briber’s fine robes.
A nest for locusts, not doves.
