I sought intercession with the parting that scattered you, hoping
I pleaded for the estranged beloved's return
that vanquished union might return as a victor.
May the rope of union return victorious
علىnotwithstanding أنthat جاهthe influence of الحظfortune أكرمthe noblest شافعintercessor
على أن جاه الحظ أكرم شافع
ولوand if صحwere sound لمnot يحتجneed إلىto بنتthe daughter of منظورManzur
ولو صح لم يحتج إلى بنت منظور
Yet fortune's influence is the noblest intercessor;
Though the intercession of auspicious fate is noble
and were it sound, it would not need Manzur's daughter.
Had it been so, Manzour's daughter's help we wouldn't implore
وماand not هوit إلاbut الحظfortune يعترضobstructs المنىwishes
وما هو إلا الحظ يعترض المنى
ولولاهand were it not for it كانwould be الدهرtime أطوعthe most obedient مأمورone under orders
ولولاه كان الدهر أطوع مأمور
And it is only fortune that obstructs wishes;
It is but fate that obstructs wishes
and without it, time would be the most obedient servant.
