وجدت في عشرة صحبي أذى
لماwhen لزمتI kept to البيتthe house فيat الوقتthe time زالit vanished
لما لزمت البيت في الوقت زال
I found harm in the company of my friends;
In company I found offense, though clear
when I stayed at home, it vanished at once.
Of fault; so home I kept and saw less of men.
ياO عجباwhat a wonder منat أشعرىan Ashʿari غداhas become
يا عجبا من أشعرى غدا
يحمدhe praises رأيthe opinion of الناسthe people فيon الاعتزالwithdrawal
يحمد رأي الناس في الاعتزال
How strange that an Ashʿari has come
Lo, poets now my prudence praise, though queered
to praise the people's view on withdrawal!
Their eyes that on my urging judged me then!
