I envied the garden breeze in every state [conjectural reading],
I envied the breeze in every meadow,
and especially on a day [conjectural reading] we spent in the protected pasture.

For how often it clasped the branches’ swaying flank,
How it embraced the pliant branches,

And hugged the erect rod of the slender palm.

and kissed the rose’s cheek, while it was stained crimson,
It kissed the cheek of the rose while it was dewy,
and the daisies’ mouth upon the hills, when it smiled.
And the lips of the narcissus in the pasture when it smiled.

And how often it went to behold a violet’s cheek-down;
How often it went to inhale the fragrance of the violet
the morning rainclouds watered it with their downpour, so it became finely patterned.
Watered by the valleys directing it thither, and it exhaled.
