بي ابتسم الدجا بعد العبوس
I am the lantern; I have shade and shadow.
I am the lantern, I have shade and light
Through me, the darkness smiled after frowning.
The gloomy darkness smiles through me at night
صبرتI endured علىin the face of لهيبflame النارthe fire حتىuntil
صبرت على لهيب النار حتى
علوتI rose منfrom الورىhumankind فوقabove الرءوسthe heads
علوت من الورى فوق الرءوس
I endured the flame of fire until
With burning fire I've learned to co-exist
I rose from among humankind, above their heads.
And now above the heads my flame persists
إذاwhen غابis absent الحبيبthe beloved أنوبI stand in عنهfor him
إذا غاب الحبيب أنوب عنه
ففضليso my merit ظاهرٌevident عندto النفوسsouls
ففضلي ظاهرٌ عند النفوس
When the beloved is absent, I stand in for him.
When the beloved's gone, I take his place
So my merit is evident to souls.
My virtues in all hearts I interlace
ويفضحنيand puts me to shame محياهhis face إذاwhen ماemphatic particle
ويفضحني محياه إذا ما
بداappears وكذاand likewise النجومthe stars معwith الشموسthe suns
بدا وكذا النجوم مع الشموس
And his face puts me to shame when
His radiance exposes me outright
it appears; so too are the stars beside the suns.
