أعف عنه وقلبي نهب ناظره
فماso not حصلتI gained علىupon وزرsin ولاnor وزرrefuge
فما حصلت على وزر ولا وزر
I abstain from him, though my heart is prey to his gaze.
Forgive him though his glances plundered my heart
So I have gained neither sin nor refuge.
I gained no blame, no blame from loving eyes apart
والسمعand hearing والقلبand the heart منfrom لوميreproach directed at me ومنand from ألميmy pain
والسمع والقلب من لومي ومن ألمي
قدalready أصبحاboth became فيهbecause of him رهنhostage to الشرevil والشررand sparks
قد أصبحا فيه رهن الشر والشرر
And my hearing and my heart, from the reproach I bear and my pain,
My hearing and my heart are pledged, because of blame
Have both become, because of him, hostages to evil and sparks.
And pain, to evil and to evil's fiery dart
