بدا في الخد عارضه فأضحى

بدا في الخد عارضه فأضحى

عذولي وهو بالسلوان يغري

His beard appeared upon his cheek, and so

A shadow appeared on his cheek, so it became

My reproacher began urging me to forget.

My excuse, while he was being coquettish with the salwa trees,

وحاول أن يرى عندي سلواً

وحاول أن يرى عندي سلواً

فقال لقد تعذر قلت صبري

فقال لقد تعذر قلت صبري

And he tried to find forgetfulness in me;

And tried to find consolation with me,

So he said, “It has indeed proved impossible.” I said, “My patience.”

So he said it was impossible, I said patience is my ally.
