بأبي من سبى الورى بمحيا
يخجلshames البدرthe full moon حسنهhis beauty حينwhen تماit became full
يخجل البدر حسنه حين تما
May my father be ransom for him who captivated mankind with a face
Whose beauty shames the moon when it is full.
عمهenveloped him خالهhis mole بحسنٍwith beauty بديعٍwondrous
عمه خاله بحسنٍ بديعٍ
ولقدand indeed قلit is rare أنthat ترىyou see الخالthe mole (also: maternal uncle) عماa paternal uncle
ولقد قل أن ترى الخال عما
His mole enveloped him in wondrous beauty—
How rare to see a mole—a “maternal uncle”—become a “paternal uncle”!
